Chapter Ten

Anne had ordered the team to gather their stuff and prepare to head back to base camp for what remained of the night. Maybe they could rest a few hours before resuming their search for the creature.

She led the team to the chopper. “Okay, everyone, mount up,” she ordered. “We saw the thing head back to the crater, so that’s where we should start. Once we know where it is, we’ll devise a new strategy for capturing it again.”

“My take is to destroy it once and for all,” Jack growled. “We need to get the army to deal with this thing.”

“We’re only looking to see if it’s hiding in the crater, Jack. Once we know it’s there, we’ll head to camp and come up with another plan,” Anne retorted.

After they had strapped in, the chopper ascended, its rotary blades casting a shadow over the desolate landscape below. Anne’s heart nearly stopped when she saw the alien creature emerge from the depths of Meteor Crater, its shimmering crystalline body glistening like a deadly jewel under the merciless sun.

“Get us out of here, now!” Tristan shouted.

The captain nodded and pulled back on the controls, but it was too late—the creature had locked onto the craft.

“Everybody, hold on!” Tristan hollered as the monster launched itself at the helicopter.

The impact violently shook the helicopter, causing chaos and panic among the team. The creature shook the chopper several times, then batted it away from the crater. With unnatural speed, the beast moved right below them, batting at the aircraft again, playing with it like it was toying with a ball. The monster suddenly latched onto the side of the chopper as Captain Morgan worked furiously to keep them airborne.

“Tristan, do something!” Anne screamed, gripping the edge of her seat as the helicopter wobbled precariously. Her gaze darted between the creature outside and her teammates inside, feeling helpless against the terror etched on their faces.

“Try to keep it steady,” Tristan yelled, unbuckling his seatbelt and lunging toward the creature. Armed with nothing but his courage, his phaser, and a survival knife, he hung on to the chopper with his left hand while plunging his blade into the iridescent mass, trying to force it to release its grip.

“Get off!” he yelled as he continued to stab.

The creature screeched, shards of its crystal body shattering and falling away like splintered glass. Its movements were jerky and erratic. Tristan stabbed again, sweat pouring down his face as he struggled to keep his balance in the shaking helicopter.

“Tristan! I can’t hold it much longer!” Captain Morgan shouted, as she fought to maintain control of the aircraft.

The robotic creature seemed only to grow more aggressive with each attack, its glowing eyes fixed on the terrified group of humans.

“Come on, you bastard. Jack, use your phaser on it,” Tristan growled, redoubling his efforts.

“Phasers don’t work on it,” Jack shouted but joined Tristan yielding a wicked-looking bowie knife.

The helicopter continued to lurch violently, the constant movement threatening to throw everyone from the craft.
